Xinjiang Local Subsidies for Wheat Expand
Source: globecotnews Date: 2008-07-10
The profitability of growing wheat has been enhanced as a result of the various local subsidies offered in Xinjiang Province. In order to promote food production, the local government has provided subsidies for wheat. For example, the commercial price of wheat is 1.54 yuan per kilogram in Qitai County; however, when the provincial and local subsidies are applied, the farmer receives 1.9 to 2.0 yuan per kilogram of wheat. The net income per hectare is approximately 9,000 to 10,500 yuan per ton, making cotton as profitable as melons, vegetables and other crops. The applied subsidies vary from county to county. In the Bayinguoleng Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, irrigated water for wheat is provided free; while in Wasu City, a subsidy of 750 yuan per hectare is offered for wheat production.
